EDTC 5070 Desktop Publishing
Course Description
This course is a study of desktop publishing and the current state of the desktop publishing industry. Emphasis will be placed on how to actually create a publication from start to finish and include emphasis on types of publications useful in the classroom. Software required or access to the software in the lab.
My Reflection
I chose to expand up on the work I did in 5040 to create a manual for students on how to use the camera to tell a story. This project was more of a struggle but I was pleased in the end. I was able to utilize key features of InDesign like custom picture wraps and overlays. I did not create custom styles that could be applied to multiple pages since I styled each differently, so that’s an area I will need to continue to develop to use InDesign most effectively.
I'm especially happy with the Martin Scorsese quotes page (the one with multiple quotes, not the single quote page). It took a lot of playing around to make the layout with the quotes look good. Aside from using a lot of ink, I think most pages are ready to be useful. I would spend some time to reconcile all the text with the ppt I use in the class to ensure there is consistent terminology, and I would like to develop more slides where students analyze stills as well as more on composition. I will use this with my film analysis class as it touches more on visual literacy than I do now, and I think that's an important concept for my students to understand.
For my classroom, it would be nice to make the form an interactive PDF where students could enter information, but that functionality causes InDesign to crash on my computer so I couldn't use that for this. Hopefully that can get figured out.
