Fairy Tale Game Design Project
What fairy tales do you think have a compelling story?
What is the conflict in the story?
How can that conflict be gamified?
What is the conflict in the story?
How can that conflict be gamified?
This is an alternative project to Theme Brainstorming & Research, where kids choose their own conflict for a game.
I decided I wanted to different way to teach theme and conflict, and I decided that rather than having students come up with their game's theme and conflict from scratch, I decided to have them choose a fairy tale for the basis of their game.
Fun fact: A student mentioned fairy tales, and then BAM the idea formulated. I'd been trying to think of an alternative to coming up with a game theme that would be fun for them, and this worked.
Pro's: Games need conflict, stories have conflict so gamification is more easily done, and kids like fairy tales.
Con's: Students may pick something they like but doesn't excite them, complicated stories make it hard to decide what to focus a game on.
But hey--I went ahead and tried it, and oh my gosh was it a good idea. Design constraints are good! Rather than the horror of the blank page, making a game from a fairy tale gave them specific elements to gamify.
